6205 vs 6205-2RS: dimensions, seals and when not to swap them
FIXTURE anchor content for skeleton validation (T09 placeholder). Replace with a fully human-written article before launch; must include an original data table and original judgement, not copied catalog prose.
Same envelope, different bearing
Both the open 6205 and the sealed 6205-2RS are 6200-series deep-groove ball bearings with a 25 mm bore, 52 mm outer diameter and 15 mm width. They interchange mechanically, but “fits the shaft” is not the same as “works for two years”.
| Parameter | 6205 (open) | 6205-2RS |
|---|---|---|
| Bore d | 25 mm | 25 mm |
| Outer diameter D | 52 mm | 52 mm |
| Width B | 15 mm | 15 mm |
| Sealing | none | two contact rubber seals |
| Relative speed | higher | lower (seal drag) |
| Relubrication | required interval | sealed-for-life, usually none |
| Best duty | clean, oil-mist, maintained drives | dust, moisture, maintenance-free positions |
The three substitution checks
- Speed budget. Contact seals add drag and heat. If the open 6205 runs near its limiting speed in a hot motor cavity, dropping in a -2RS unit can shorten grease life dramatically.
- Contamination path. If the housing already provides labyrinth sealing and positive lubrication, paying for 2RS seals buys little; the open variant may run cooler.
- Clearance, not just suffix. Many sealed catalog listings ship C3 clearance while open listings default to CN. Check the bearing code as a whole, not only the base number.
Original judgement rule
Treat base-number equality as a dimension match and the suffix as an environment match. Procurement wins only when both match the machine duty.
